Sinan Koçaslan
Born in Ankara in 1961, R. Sinan Koçaslan completed his primary and secondary education in the city before moving to Istanbul in 1972. After graduating from Haydarpaşa High School in 1979, he began studying photography in 1981 at the Photography Institute of the School of Fine Arts at the State Academy of Fine Arts, today known as Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Starting in 1983, he worked as the assistant of lecturer Yılmaz Kaini. In 1985, he received second prize in the Young Photographers category at the Yıldız University International Photography Competition, and he graduated in 1986 from the Photography Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Koçaslan is a member of the UK-based Royal Photographic Society.
Koçaslan’s photographs explore the relationship between urban life, everyday experience, and individual observation. In 1999, he participated in the Merhaba Atina / Here Istanbul project curated by Engin Özendes, alongside Ara Güler, İzzet Keribar, Arif Aşçı, and Cem Turgay. His works were acquired by the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art in 2004, and in 2019 he took part in the A Road Story project at Pera Museum with his photographs taken in Beirut and Baalbek.
Koçaslan opened his solo exhibition New York Diary in 2025 at Nilüfer Municipality’s Misi Photography Museum, featuring photographs he produced during his 13 years living in New York. His works have been exhibited at Istanbul Modern, Pera Museum, Pamukbank Photography Gallery, and various art institutions in Tokyo.
Koçaslan continues to live and work in Istanbul.
